Pressed Steel Cage NU300 Series Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Temperature and speed limits, lubricant compatibility, and the bore range this cage is offered across.

Pressed Steel Cage NU300 Series Cylindrical Roller Bearings are made from low-carbon sheet steel, two-piece riveted or ribbon type, rolling-element guided. Corrosion behavior: as the rings — it relies on the lubricant and the seals. The material is magnetic, and the usable service range is not the limiting element; the lubricant and the ring heat stabilization decide. In practice this material is the standard cage of volume bearing production: light, cheap, tolerant of temperature and unaffected by the oils that age a polymer cage.

Property figures are typical for the material. In an assembled bearing the lubricant, the seals and the cage frequently reach their limits before the material does, so check all four against the duty. Material certification is available on request for production orders.

Gearbox bearing — NU300 Series Cylindrical Roller Bearings in service

Material specification page for nu300 series cylindrical roller bearings in Pressed Steel Cage. Covers the grade designation (low-carbon sheet steel, two-piece riveted or ribbon type, rolling-element guided), what the material does inside the bearing, its temperature and environmental limits, the alternatives worth considering, and the sizes available to ISO 15 / DIN 5412-1 / GB/T 283.

Why Pressed Steel Cage for NU300 Series Cylindrical Roller Bearings

The standard cage of volume bearing production: light, cheap, tolerant of temperature and unaffected by the oils that age a polymer cage. In a nu300 series cylindrical roller bearings it is the cage, which spaces the rolling elements and keeps them from touching each other.

Pressed from sheet and guided by the rolling elements, it adds almost no mass and almost no cost, tolerates a wide temperature range, and is unaffected by lubricant chemistry. It is the default cage of the standard bearing ranges for good reasons.

Service Limits

It is a light-duty cage: it is guided by the rolling elements and it is not intended for heavy vibration, high acceleration or sustained very high speed, which is where the machined brass cage takes over. In a heavily shocked application, cage damage rather than raceway fatigue is what ends the bearing.

What the Material Changes About the Bearing

The cage carries no load, so it changes no rating. What it changes is the operating envelope: the maximum temperature, the maximum speed, the tolerance of shock and vibration, the noise, and the compatibility with the lubricant. A bearing is very often limited by its cage long before its rings are in any danger, which is why the cage suffix in a designation is not a detail.

Fitting a Steel Bearing in an Aluminum Housing

Aluminum has roughly twice the coefficient of thermal expansion of bearing steel, so a housing bore machined to a normal H7 fit at room temperature grows away from the outer ring as the machine reaches operating temperature. The outer ring then turns in its seat and wears the bore. Where the housing is aluminum and the temperature rise is more than about 30 degrees C, tighten the housing fit by one grade — J7 or K7 in place of H7 — or fit a steel sleeve into the aluminum. Check the resulting internal clearance: a tighter housing fit takes clearance out of the bearing, which is often why C3 is specified alongside it.

Every ring is gauged for bore and outside diameter, every assembly for radial internal clearance to ISO 5753-1, and every finished bearing for vibration. That is why the values on this page are quotable rather than indicative.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the limits of Pressed Steel Cage?

It is a light-duty cage: it is guided by the rolling elements and it is not intended for heavy vibration, high acceleration or sustained very high speed, which is where the machined brass cage takes over. In a heavily shocked application, cage damage rather than raceway fatigue is what ends the bearing.

What should I use instead of Pressed Steel Cage?

Polyamide where quiet running and low friction matter and the temperature is moderate; machined brass where speed, shock or lubricant chemistry rules both of the others out.

Does Pressed Steel Cage change the dimensions or the rating?

The cage carries no load, so it changes no rating. What it changes is the operating envelope: the maximum temperature, the maximum speed, the tolerance of shock and vibration, the noise, and the compatibility with the lubricant. A bearing is very often limited by its cage long before its rings are in any danger, which is why the cage suffix in a designation is not a detail.

Does the cage affect the load rating?

No. The cage carries no load — it spaces the rolling elements and guides them. What it decides is the operating envelope: the temperature limit, the speed limit, the tolerance of shock and vibration, the noise, and the compatibility with the lubricant.
