Pressed Steel Cage 6000 Series Deep Groove Ball Bearings

Temperature and speed limits, lubricant compatibility, and the bore range this cage is offered across.

Pressed Steel Cage 6000 Series Deep Groove Ball Bearings are made from low-carbon sheet steel, two-piece riveted or ribbon type, rolling-element guided. Corrosion behavior: as the rings — it relies on the lubricant and the seals. The material is magnetic, and the usable service range is not the limiting element; the lubricant and the ring heat stabilization decide. In practice this material is the standard cage of volume bearing production: light, cheap, tolerant of temperature and unaffected by the oils that age a polymer cage.

Property figures are typical for the material. In an assembled bearing the lubricant, the seals and the cage frequently reach their limits before the material does, so check all four against the duty. Material certification is available on request for production orders.

Industrial fan bearing — 6000 Series Deep Groove Ball Bearings in service

Pressed Steel Cage 6000 Series Deep Groove Ball Bearings: The standard cage of volume bearing production: light, cheap, tolerant of temperature and unaffected by the oils that age a polymer cage. The material decides the corrosion behavior — as the rings — it relies on the lubricant and the seals and the temperature the part will stand (not the limiting element; the lubricant and the ring heat stabilization decide), and it is the reason the alternatives below exist. Properties, limits and the full size table follow.

Why Pressed Steel Cage for 6000 Series Deep Groove Ball Bearings

The standard cage of volume bearing production: light, cheap, tolerant of temperature and unaffected by the oils that age a polymer cage. In a 6000 series deep groove ball bearings it is the cage, which spaces the rolling elements and keeps them from touching each other.

Pressed from sheet and guided by the rolling elements, it adds almost no mass and almost no cost, tolerates a wide temperature range, and is unaffected by lubricant chemistry. It is the default cage of the standard bearing ranges for good reasons.

Service Limits

It is a light-duty cage: it is guided by the rolling elements and it is not intended for heavy vibration, high acceleration or sustained very high speed, which is where the machined brass cage takes over. In a heavily shocked application, cage damage rather than raceway fatigue is what ends the bearing.

Alternatives and When to Switch

Polyamide where quiet running and low friction matter and the temperature is moderate; machined brass where speed, shock or lubricant chemistry rules both of the others out.

Fitting a Steel Bearing in an Aluminum Housing

Aluminum has roughly twice the coefficient of thermal expansion of bearing steel, so a housing bore machined to a normal H7 fit at room temperature grows away from the outer ring as the machine reaches operating temperature. The outer ring then turns in its seat and wears the bore. Where the housing is aluminum and the temperature rise is more than about 30 degrees C, tighten the housing fit by one grade — J7 or K7 in place of H7 — or fit a steel sleeve into the aluminum. Check the resulting internal clearance: a tighter housing fit takes clearance out of the bearing, which is often why C3 is specified alongside it.

Ring forging, heat treatment, raceway grinding and superfinishing all happen under one roof, so a bore tolerance and a clearance group are set by processes we control and can evidence, not by whichever supplier had stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What corrosion resistance does Pressed Steel Cage give?

Corrosion behavior: as the rings — it relies on the lubricant and the seals.

Why is Pressed Steel Cage used for this part?

Pressed from sheet and guided by the rolling elements, it adds almost no mass and almost no cost, tolerates a wide temperature range, and is unaffected by lubricant chemistry. It is the default cage of the standard bearing ranges for good reasons.

What are the limits of Pressed Steel Cage?

It is a light-duty cage: it is guided by the rolling elements and it is not intended for heavy vibration, high acceleration or sustained very high speed, which is where the machined brass cage takes over.
