Machined Brass Cage 7000C Series Angular Contact Ball Bearings

Temperature and speed limits, lubricant compatibility, and the bore range this cage is offered across.

Machined Brass Cage 7000C Series Angular Contact Ball Bearings are made from machined cast or wrought brass, rolling-element or ring guided (suffix M, MA, MB or MP by maker). Corrosion behavior: good in most industrial environments; brass is attacked by ammonia, so it is not used in ammonia refrigeration plant. The material is non-magnetic, and the usable service range is the cage itself is good well past the temperature at which the lubricant and the ring stabilization give out. In practice this material is specified for large bearings, high speed, heavy shock and vibration, and wherever temperature or lubricant rules out polyamide.

Property figures are typical for the material. In an assembled bearing the lubricant, the seals and the cage frequently reach their limits before the material does, so check all four against the duty. Material certification is available on request for production orders.

Why Machined Brass Cage for 7000C Series Angular Contact Ball Bearings

Specified for large bearings, high speed, heavy shock and vibration, and wherever temperature or lubricant rules out polyamide. In a 7000c series angular contact ball bearings it is the cage, which spaces the rolling elements and keeps them from touching each other.

A machined brass cage is strong, stable at temperature, and unaffected by the oils and additives that age a polymer cage. It is what large bearings, high-speed bearings and heavily shocked bearings are supplied with.

Alternatives and When to Switch

Polyamide is lighter, quieter and cheaper for ordinary speeds and temperatures; pressed steel is the volume standard. Brass earns its cost where the cage forces or the temperature are genuinely beyond both.

What the Material Changes About the Bearing

The cage carries no load, so it changes no rating. What it changes is the operating envelope: the maximum temperature, the maximum speed, the tolerance of shock and vibration, the noise, and the compatibility with the lubricant. A bearing is very often limited by its cage long before its rings are in any danger, which is why the cage suffix in a designation is not a detail.

Fitting a Steel Bearing in an Aluminum Housing

Aluminum has roughly twice the coefficient of thermal expansion of bearing steel, so a housing bore machined to a normal H7 fit at room temperature grows away from the outer ring as the machine reaches operating temperature. The outer ring then turns in its seat and wears the bore. Where the housing is aluminum and the temperature rise is more than about 30 degrees C, tighten the housing fit by one grade — J7 or K7 in place of H7 — or fit a steel sleeve into the aluminum. Check the resulting internal clearance: a tighter housing fit takes clearance out of the bearing, which is often why C3 is specified alongside it.

Ring forging, heat treatment, raceway grinding and superfinishing all happen under one roof, so a bore tolerance and a clearance group are set by processes we control and can evidence, not by whichever supplier had stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Machined Brass Cage change the dimensions or the rating?

The cage carries no load, so it changes no rating. What it changes is the operating envelope: the maximum temperature, the maximum speed, the tolerance of shock and vibration, the noise, and the compatibility with the lubricant. A bearing is very often limited by its cage long before its rings are in any danger, which is why the cage suffix in a designation is not a detail.

Does the cage affect the load rating?

No. The cage carries no load — it spaces the rolling elements and guides them. What it decides is the operating envelope: the temperature limit, the speed limit, the tolerance of shock and vibration, the noise, and the compatibility with the lubricant.

How do I know which cage a bearing has?

From the suffix in the designation. The conventions differ between makers, but a bearing without a cage suffix normally has the standard pressed steel cage, and the polyamide and machined brass alternatives are always marked. Where the cage matters to the duty, state it on the order rather than assuming.

Are Machined Brass Cage 7000C Series Angular Contact Ball Bearings magnetic?

Machined Brass Cage is non-magnetic.
